A Night of Mixed Messages

And that’s a wrap on the 2024 Met Gala! Did you have fun following along? We sure did, but one thing stood out to us: the theme left a lot of people scratching their heads. Anna Wintour even hinted at this when she apologized on Monday morning during an interview with Today, saying the theme “Sleeping Beauties” was “wonderful and poetic and romantic,” but maybe a bit too vague. “I fear that we’ve unleashed a lot of confusion out there,” she admitted.

Fashion Hits and Misses

Most outfits were hard to figure out. There were some hits, though. Lana Del Rey looked stunning in Alexander McQueen, Barry Keoghan rocked Burberry, and Zendaya nailed it in a Givenchy look by John Galliano. Balenciaga’s nod to archival gowns worn by Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts was also pretty clever.

But overall, the red carpet needed a bit more oomph. The Met Gala is the place to push fashion boundaries. Remember Jared Leto dressed as Choupette the cat in 2023? Or Zendaya’s Cinderella moment in 2019? Even Rihanna’s omelette dress in 2017? Those were unforgettable! Cardi B’s dress with a wingspan of a jumbo jet was cool, but it didn’t quite hit Lady Gaga’s four outfit changes level.

Where Were the Memes?

A memorable Met Gala leaves us with tons of memes, but tonight? Not so much. Let’s hope the after-party looks spice things up a bit. Until then, good night from us!

Camila Cabello’s Cool Clutch

Camila Cabello turned heads with her clutch—a giant ice cube with a single rose inside. The idea is that by the end of the night, the ice will melt, leaving her holding just the rose stem. But maybe it should have come with a frostbite warning?

Sydney Sweeney’s Bold New Look

Sydney Sweeney switched things up with a blunt brunette bob and bangs, ditching her long blonde hair. She arrived wearing a black lace veil but took it off for the photographers. This new look definitely shows her edgy side.

Adwoa Aboah’s Big Reveal

No Met Gala is complete without a celebrity pregnancy announcement. Congrats to Adwoa Aboah! She showed off her baby bump in a navel-revealing H&M outfit.

Lewis Hamilton’s Fashion Pitstop

Fresh from the Miami GP Sprint, Lewis Hamilton made a stylish appearance in Burberry. His coat, with embroidery inspired by John Ystumllyn, reflects the language of flowers in Black history. It’s a thoughtful and unique look.

Protests Outside the Gala

While the stars were shining on the red carpet, there were protests nearby. People gathered to demonstrate against the war in Gaza, leading to several arrests. The police had to set up barriers to keep the protesters away from the event.

Erykah Badu’s Statement Look

Erykah Badu stunned in a Comme des Garçons outfit straight from the spring/summer 2024 runway. With clashing florals, tulle, and ruffles, it was a lot to take in, but we loved it.

Cardi B’s Show-Stopper

Entertainment Tonight captured Cardi B making a grand entrance. Her dress’s wingspan is still being measured, but it’s clear she’s aiming for the top spot tonight.

image

Zendaya’s Second Look

Why settle for one killer look when you can have two? Zendaya did an outfit change, showing off a 1996 Givenchy by John Galliano gown. Her headpiece from Philip Treacy for Alexander McQueen 2007 was absolutely stunning. Flower markets, take note!

Michelle Yeoh’s Cool Elegance

Michelle Yeoh’s strapless Balenciaga look was perfectly balanced. Comparing it to a marathon runner’s foil blanket wouldn’t do it justice.

image

Naomi Watts’ Big Swan Energy

Naomi Watts brought “Big Swan Energy” to the carpet. Her Balenciaga look nodded to Truman Capote’s 1966 Black & White Ball and was based on a 1950s dress from the house.

image

Chloë Sevigny’s Fashion Forward Look

Chloë Sevigny didn’t disappoint, wearing a deconstructed, embellished, corseted look by designer Dilara Findikoglu. It was a lot, but in a good way.

image

Barry Keoghan’s Perfect Execution

Barry Keoghan nailed the theme with his Burberry outfit, complete with a top hat, pussybow detailing, and pocket watch. It was wonderfully over-the-top.

Lizzo’s Flute-Free Appearance

Lizzo, sans flute, still managed to captivate the crowd with her sculptural look from Paris-based label Weinsanto.

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez’s Glamorous Arrival

Jeff Bezos was spotted at the top of the Met steps waiting for his fiancée, Lauren Sánchez. This marks his second Met Gala appearance, the first being in 2012 when Amazon sponsored it.

image

Cardi B’s Red Carpet Domination

Cardi B practically shut down the red carpet with her massive gown. With over 10 assistants helping her, she blocked the way for everyone else. Now, all that’s left is for her to climb the Met steps!

And that’s the 2024 Met Gala, folks! What a night of fashion, surprises, and a bit of chaos. See you next year!
