Coalition Challenges for Modi’s Next Move

Narendra Modi finds himself in uncharted waters post-election, as his BJP falls short of a majority. Now, smaller allies hold the cards in forming the government.

Modi’s BJP clinched the most seats in the recent polls, yet failed to secure a clear majority of 272 seats. This outcome forces them into the complex realm of coalition-building to stay in power.

After years of dominating solo, Modi now faces the daunting task of negotiating with diverse partners. “This is Modi’s first time playing the coalition game,” remarked Prof Christophe Jaffrelot from King’s College London.

The smaller parties within Modi’s National Democratic Alliance (NDA) are flexing newfound muscles. They’re pushing for plum positions in the cabinet and crucial parliamentary roles.

The Telugu Desam party (TDP), led by Chandrababu Naidu, with its 16 seats, eyes the parliamentary speaker post and demands five cabinet berths. Meanwhile, Bihar’s Nitish Kumar, of Janata Dal (United), seeks a share with at least three cabinet positions.

Reports suggest the BJP is reluctant to cede control of key ministries like defence, finance, and home affairs. They are adamant that these posts stay within their ranks.

While the NDA presents a united front endorsing Modi as their leader and PM candidate, the horse-trading within the coalition suggests challenges ahead. Some of these allies have a history of switching sides, adding to the uncertainty.

With Modi’s swearing-in ceremony looming, there’s urgency to finalize arrangements. Leaders from neighboring countries like Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are on the guest list, underscoring the event’s regional significance.

International leaders, including US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron, have extended congratulations, highlighting Modi’s global diplomatic engagements.

Meanwhile, India’s opposition coalition, the INDIA bloc, has opted not to vie for power despite a strong showing. They allege irregularities and market manipulation, claims swiftly rebuffed by BJP officials.

In a press conference, Rahul Gandhi accused Modi of influencing the stock market, sparking a political storm post-election. The BJP dismissed these allegations as baseless, attributing them to sour grapes.

As Modi navigates these coalition waters, his next moves will determine the shape of India’s governance in the coming years.
