So, picture this: Thousands of Jair Bolsonaro’s diehard fans are flooding the streets of Rio. Why? To support their troubled leader and to cheer for the latest hero of their far-right movement: Elon Musk.

Elon Musk Enters the Scene

The tech billionaire, Musk, has been super active lately on his social network, X. He’s been going after Bolsonaro’s biggest foe, Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes. Moraes is the guy behind a bunch of investigations that could land Bolsonaro in some serious trouble, including one about a supposed coup plan before the big right-wing riot in Brasília on January 8, 2023.

Since April, Musk has been on a rampage against Moraes, calling him “Brazil’s Darth Vader” and likening him to a “brutal dictator.”

Musk tweeted, “This judge has brazenly and repeatedly betrayed the constitution and people of Brazil. He should resign or be impeached.”

The Big Drama Unfolds

Musk’s tweets have made progressive Brazilians furious. They think it’s all part of a bigger plan to mess with Brazil’s left-wing government. Gleisi Hoffmann, head of the Workers’ Party, said Musk’s attacks are meant to help Brazil’s far-right. And the First Lady, Janja Lula da Silva, accused X of being part of “a coordinated operation against democracy.”

But guess what? Bolsonaro’s followers love it! They see Musk as a hero fighting against Moraes, who they believe is out to get right-wing influencers, politicians, and activists. Moraes has even had social media accounts blocked and ordered arrests of Bolsonaro supporters.

Rally Time in Rio

On Sunday, Rio’s Copacabana beach was packed with tens of thousands of Bolsonaro fans, all there to honor both Bolsonaro and Musk. People like Alfredo Queiroz, 68, came from nearby cities with banners thanking Musk. Queiroz said, “He is supporting Brazil against this shameless bloody dictatorship that we have in this country.”

Sergio Galvão, a 51-year-old Bolsonarista, said, “Elon Musk has been an essential guy for us. God has used this man to expose the dictatorship that has taken hold in Brazil to the whole world.”

Musk and Bolsonaro: A Dynamic Duo

Bolsonaro’s supporters were over the moon with Musk’s backing. As Bolsonaro got ready to speak, right-wing politicians and preachers praised Musk. Gustavo Gayer, a pro-Bolsonaro congressman, shouted in English to send a message to Musk and his 181.5 million followers: “This is a message to the world. Look at what is happening here in Brazil today. What you see here are freedom-loving people who are fighting for democracy.”

Bolsonaro himself praised Musk, saying, “He is a man who truly cares about the freedom of all of us.”

The Bigger Picture

Analysts believe this beach rally was Bolsonaro’s way of showing he’s still got political strength, even with the threat of jail looming. Bolsonaro, who led Brazil from 2019 to 2023, has been banned from running for office and faces several criminal probes. The most serious is about an alleged coup attempt after his 2022 election loss to Lula.

A congressional inquiry last year said Bolsonaro had planned a coup to keep power, causing chaos in Brazil’s democracy. Bolsonaro denied these claims on Sunday, calling on his followers to “fight” to avoid going “to the slaughterhouse like lambs.”

The Rally’s Real Impact

Despite all the noise, Sunday’s rally was smaller than past ones. Back in 2022, Copacabana was packed for Bolsonaro, with people even on speedboats and jetskis to see him. This time, many started heading home or to nearby bars before Bolsonaro finished his speech.

This was a wild scene in Rio, showing the deep divides in Brazil’s politics and how figures like Elon Musk can shake things up on a global scale.
